Actually, contracts do both.  They create rights as well as duties.  Like white lines on a highway, contracts establish boundaries.  They keep us from bumping into each other and allow us to move quickly from point A to B.  It’s unfortunate when people view them as limiting devices instead of facilitating devices.  There would be a lot more problems if we didn’t have those little white lines.
